Chess
Standard
Nothing changes: this is chess exactly as the international Laws of Chess set it out, with the repetition and fifty-move draws claimed for you automatically.
What is different here
Standard chess is the game the rest of this site measures itself against. Both players start from the familiar array, White moves first, and the aim is checkmate.
The engine follows the 2023 edition of the international Laws: castling with every one of its conditions, capture in passing, promotion to a queen, rook, bishop or knight, and the full set of draws.
The one difference from a game across a table is that nothing here has to be claimed. The server watches for repetition and for the fifty-move count on both sides at once, and ends the game itself.
- The standard starting array, and White moves first.
- Castling, capture in passing, and promotion to any of four pieces.
- Stalemate is a draw, not a win.
- Threefold repetition and the fifty-move rule are applied automatically, for both players.
- Running out of time is a draw if your opponent has no material that could ever mate.
