Xiangqi

Tournament

Full federation xiangqi: a stalemated player loses, and repeating a position by endless checking or by chasing an undefended piece loses for the aggressor.

What is different here

This is xiangqi as it is played in international competition, following the rules of the Asian Xiangqi Federation. Board, pieces and moves are exactly the standard game.

What this preset adds is a judgement on repetition. A player who checks endlessly to avoid losing is not granted a draw: that player must vary the moves or forfeit. The same applies to a one-sided chase, where one player repeatedly threatens an enemy piece that has no defender. The chaser must stop or lose.

Choose this preset if you want the game a tournament player would recognise, where a lost position cannot be rescued by shuffling.

  • Standard board: nine files by ten ranks of points, river, two palaces.
  • A player with no legal move loses, in check or not.
  • Perpetual check loses for the player giving the checks.
  • A one-sided perpetual chase of an undefended piece loses for the chaser.
  • No progress for 120 half-moves without a capture is a draw.
  • Draws also by agreement and by insufficient attacking material.
